Zero Cold Starts: Serverless AI Agents on Akamai Functions — Thorsten Hans

AI Engineer · Oct 10, 2026 · Engineering Insights

WebAssembly via Spin and Akamai Functions eliminates cold starts for globally distributed AI agents and MCPs.

“What I call the Edge Native AI stack is a combination of a CNCF project called Spin and Akamai Functions.”

Akamai developer advocate Thorsten Hans presented a technique for deploying AI agents and MCP servers using WebAssembly (via the CNCF Spin project) on Akamai Functions to achieve zero cold starts with global distribution. The approach sidesteps traditional container/VM cold-start latency (seconds to minutes) and avoids proprietary SDK lock-in common with hyperscaler serverless platforms. Relevant for engineering teams wrestling with latency and cost when scaling AI agent infrastructure globally.
