Introducing NVIDIA OpenShell Reference Architecture for Safer AI Agents

NVIDIA GTC · Oct 21, 2026 · Product Launches

NVIDIA OpenShell enforces AI agent security at kernel level, not just LLM guardrails

“hope isn't security. Safety isn't an aspiration. It's technology and engineering.”

NVIDIA introduced OpenShell, an open-source (Apache 2.0) reference architecture that enforces AI agent permissions at the system-call level using Linux kernel isolation and formal policy verification, moving security enforcement outside the agent itself. Paired with NVIDIA Sentry running on BlueField 4 DPUs, the stack adds hardware-isolated monitoring that can quarantine a misbehaving agent in milliseconds. This is significant because it shifts agentic AI security from prompt-level 'please don't' guardrails to infrastructure-level enforcement, directly addressing enterprise deployment risk at scale.
