Nadella says Microsoft must earn community 'permission' before building AI data centers.
“Only when we live up to these principles, do the hard work around it, is when we earn the permission to go ahead and innovate and build.”— Satya Nadella
At the Microsoft Build keynote, Satya Nadella framed AI data center expansion around earning a social license from local communities, citing principles like not raising electricity prices, replenishing water, creating jobs, and funding local training. This signals a CEO messaging shift that positions infrastructure buildout as contingent on community trust and sustainability rather than raw capacity alone.
