Bill Gates’ Daughter is in Trouble
Phoebe Gates' AI shopping tool Fia accused of fraudulent affiliate cookie stuffing
“We found that if you have the Fia extension installed on your mobile browser, it automatically runs in the background as soon as you add an item to your cart on partner sites, even if you are not interacting with the Fia app or extension.”
Fia, an AI-powered price comparison tool founded by Phoebe Gates (Bill Gates' daughter) and backed by $43.5M in funding, was exposed by Bloomberg in July 2026 for allegedly running its browser extension in the background to claim affiliate commissions on purchases it didn't influence. The scandal draws comparisons to the Honey browser extension lawsuit and carries potential criminal liability of up to 20 years. While this touches AI-adjacent consumer tooling, it is primarily a legal/fraud story with limited signal for AI industry practitioners.
