Microsoft is introducing a SQL MCP Server built on its Data API Builder technology, designed to let AI agents query SQL databases more reliably than early NL-to-SQL approaches. The talk contextualizes the product against a 2022-2023 wave of poor AI-generated SQL queries that disappointed developers. The MCP-based approach represents Microsoft's bet on standardized agent-to-database connectivity as an alternative to fragile prompt-based query generation.
