The Case for Data Centers in Space

StarCloud raised $170M to build space data centers solving AI's terrestrial energy bottleneck

“we are very quickly running up on constraints on where we can build new energy projects terrestrially. And so by building them in space, we get access to this almost unlimited lowcost energy in the form of solar.”

StarCloud, founded in January 2024, raised $170M led by Benchmark and became the fastest-growing YC unicorn in history at 17 months post-demo day, building orbital data centers powered by solar energy to bypass terrestrial energy infrastructure constraints driven by AI compute demand. CEO Philip Johnston argues declining launch costs via Falcon 9 and Starship make space-based compute economically viable. This represents an emerging infrastructure thesis that AI's energy problem may be solved off-planet rather than through grid expansion.
