AWS launches autonomous machine-to-machine payment capability for AI agents via AgentCore and Anchor Browser
AWS has launched a managed payment capability (AgentCore payments) integrated with Anchor Browser that allows AI agents to autonomously handle HTTP 402 Payment Required responses, enabling agents to pay for paywalled APIs, datasets, and web content without human intervention. The system uses the x402 open protocol for machine-to-machine payments, enforces configurable spending limits, and provides CloudWatch observability. This matters because autonomous economic agency — agents that can transact on their own — is a key infrastructure gap on the path to fully autonomous AI workflows.
