GitHub Models is now retired
GitHub Models unified LLM API has been fully retired as of late July 2026
“GitHub Models is temporarily unavailable as part of a scheduled retirement brownout.”
GitHub has shut down GitHub Models, its unified LLM API and playground that allowed GitHub Actions workflows to use a single API key across multiple providers. The retirement was unannounced in terms of reasoning, but Simon Willison speculates the economics of coding agents made subsidized token access unsustainable — a pattern seen elsewhere in the industry. This signals ongoing pressure on free/subsidized LLM tiers as agentic usage drives up costs.
