Python Typing Survey 2026: AI Tools and the Shifting Checker Landscape
61% of Python developers now use AI tools for at least one type-checking activity
“I fix AI coded type hints because AI often gets lazy and uses object for everything.”
The 2026 Python Typing Survey (n=1,794) found that AI tool use in typing workflows surged: 42.5% of developers had AI write type hints, and the share crediting AI for making generated code more accurate nearly doubled from 18.5% to 38.4% year-over-year. The data reveals a feedback loop where AI tools invoke checkers and then fix the errors they produce. Quality concerns emerged, with developers noting AI generates overly broad types and sometimes suppresses checker errors rather than resolving them.
