Stateless MCP has recaptured my interest (and inspired mcp-explorer and datasette-mcp)

MCP 2.0 drops stateful sessions, collapsing tool calls to a single HTTP request

“This is so much cleaner from both a client- and server-side implementation perspective. It's also a better fit for building scalable web applications, since now you don't need to maintain server-side state to keep track of those session IDs, or worry about routing the same session to the same backend machine.”

The MCP 2026-07-28 specification (MCP 2.0) eliminates stateful session initialization, reducing tool calls from two HTTP round-trips to one and removing server-side session tracking entirely. Willison argues this makes MCP more compelling than giving agents raw shell access, since MCP tools are auditable, controllable, and light enough for smaller on-device models. The spec change also revives ecosystem momentum after MCP was partially eclipsed by Skills-based agent harnesses in 2025.
