Improve TTFT for multi-turn agentic workloads with bi-directional KV transfer in vLLM
AWS contributes bi-directional KV cache transfer to vLLM, cutting TTFT up to 3.3x
AWS has contributed a bi-directional KV cache transfer feature to the open-source vLLM inference engine that allows decode nodes to return previously computed KV blocks to prefill nodes on subsequent conversation turns. This eliminates redundant recomputation of growing conversation histories in multi-turn agentic workloads, reducing time-to-first-token by up to 3.3x in benchmarks. The contribution matters because it directly addresses a core scaling bottleneck for production agentic applications where inference costs and latency grow with context length.
