How Meta Engineered Ultra-Narrow Batteries for AI Glasses

Meta Engineering · Jun 23, 2026 · Engineering Insights

Meta engineered 7mm-wide steel-can batteries to power all-day AI features in smart glasses.

“Smart glasses need a battery that can claim every micron of space – something rigid, precise, and shaped to the product rather than the other way around.”

Meta engineers detailed how they replaced traditional pouch cells with custom die-cut, stacked-layer steel-can batteries as narrow as 7mm to fit AI glasses' temple arms while delivering peak power for simultaneous camera and AI workloads. Gen 2 Ray-Ban Meta glasses doubled runtime through system-level efficiency gains despite only a 30 percent capacity bump. It's a notable hardware enabler for wearable AI but a narrow engineering story rather than a major industry signal.
