GitHub's Octoverse 2026 report shows agentic engineering has dramatically accelerated software development activity: merged PRs tripled to 220M/month, commits more than tripled to 7.38B/month, and new repos doubled to 30.3M/month — all within a single year. The acceleration is most pronounced in the second half of 2026, suggesting a tipping point in AI-assisted coding. GitHub also used LLM classification in their methodology for geographic attribution, signaling AI tooling embedded even in data infrastructure.
