Adaptive agentic intelligence framework using Strands Agents
AAIF routes routine agent tasks to local SLMs and complex tasks to cloud models to cut costs
“sufficiently powerful, inherently more suitable, and necessarily more economical for many invocations in agentic systems”
AWS describes a three-layer Adaptive Agentic Intelligence Framework that uses a 1B-parameter SLM orchestrator to classify and route requests — sending routine tasks to local Ollama-hosted SLMs and complex analysis to Amazon Bedrock frontier models. The architecture is grounded in NVIDIA research arguing SLMs are more economical for the majority of agentic invocations. This hybrid local/cloud routing pattern is an emerging practical answer to the cost and latency problems of routing all agent traffic through large cloud models.
