Securing AI agent identity with X.509 PKI on AWS
MCP has no built-in authentication, leaving multi-agent AI systems vulnerable to impersonation.
“MCP has no built-in authentication standard. It is transport-agnostic by design. This creates a critical gap: Without proper identity mechanisms, any component could impersonate an agent, replay intercepted credentials, or invoke tools without authorization.”
AWS and Keyfactor published a reference architecture for securing multi-agent AI systems using X.509 PKI, addressing a foundational authentication gap in the Model Context Protocol. The solution combines Amazon Bedrock and the Strands Agents SDK with Keyfactor EJBCA to issue short-lived, revocable cryptographic identities to AI agents. As MCP adoption accelerates across enterprise AI deployments, the lack of a native auth standard is emerging as a critical infrastructure concern.
